SHOWTIME Sports on Friday announced seven live boxing telecasts over a 12-week span, a stacked lineup featuring nine world championship fights and 14 overall matches in boxing’s deepest and most exciting divisions.
It’s been a slow year in general for the boxing world, as fans have patiently waited – perhaps to a fault – waiting for something to finally happen. The upcoming spring/early summer schedule is as strong an indication as any that Showtime is doing its part to shake up the status quo.
This coming Saturday night, fans were anticipating a long awaited showdown between WBA welterweight champion Keith 'One Time' Thurman (26-0, 22KOs) and former IBF king Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16KOs).
The never ending saga between welterweights Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter will drag on a bit longer. The long-awaited match-up - which was supposed to take place on March 12th at the Mohegan Sun - was scrapped after Thurman suffered injuries in an auto accident. It's not clear just when this fight will be re-scheduled.
The last we saw of Shawn Porter was on the night of June 20th when he out-fought Adrien Broner over twelve rounds at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Since that point he's been idle as he's been forced to wait for a fight against Keith Thurman to materialize.
It was announced earlier tonight that the anticipated welterweight clash between Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter, scheduled for March 12th at the Mohegan Sun, had been postponed as Thurman sustained an undisclosed injury related to an automobile accident.
NEW YORK (Feb. 22, 2016)–-Undefeated world champion Keith Thurman sustained an injury as a result of a car accident that has forced his March 12 welterweight title defense against Shawn Porter to be postponed. The announcement was made today by promoter Lou DiBella, president of DiBella Entertainment. According to his doctors, Thurman’s injuries are not considered serious and he is expected to be cleared to resume training in the coming weeks. Thurman vs. Porter was the main event of a scheduled two-fight card to be broadcast in prime time on CBS. This fight and the network broadcast will now be rescheduled for a later date.
Shawn Porter is confident his experience has prepared him better than Keith Thurman for their nationally televised welterweight title fight March 12. The 28-year-old Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs), of Akron, Ohio, has defeated former welterweight champions Adrien Broner, Paulie Malignaggi and Devon Alexander in three of his past five fights. He also suffered his lone defeat during that stretch, a 12-round majority decision to unbeaten IBF welterweight champ Kell Brook.
Ken Porter, father and trainer of former IBF welterweight champion "Showtime" Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16KOs), hopes WBA welterweight champion Keith 'One Time' Thurman (26-0, 22KOs) is coming to fight. Their bout takes place on March 12th at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.
LAS VEGAS - Welterweight star "Showtime" Shawn Porter opened up his training camp to media Thursday at Porter Hy-Performance Center in Las Vegas as he prepares for his primetime showdown with welterweight world champion Keith "One Time" Thurman on Saturday, March 12 on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on CBS presented by Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) from Mohegan Sun Resort in Connecticut.
