| Team Rigondeaux Respond To Larry Merchant's Comments
|
|
By Reynaldo Sanchez Boris Arencibia, the CEO of Caribe Promotions, was offended by a recent interview on BoxingScene.com with HBO analyst Larry Merchant, who made critical comments pertaining to undefeated WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo “The Jackal” Rigondeaux. According to Merchant, there is no reason for WBO champion Nonito "Filipino Flash" Donaire to accept a challenge from Rigondeaux at this moment in time. Merchant says the Cuban is not popular enough to demand a fight with Donaire. Arencibia, who assists in the handling of Rigondeaux's career, said the following - “Larry Merchant is an boxing analyst, I don't understand how he can say that Guillermo is not known well known enough for a fight against Donaire, and how he can say this isn’t what the boxing fans want to see in the ring. Rigondeaux is the super bantamweight champion of the WBA and not only that - he is a former two time Olympic gold medalist and also an ex- amateur world champion. Perhaps nobody knew who Oscar De La Hoya was when he made his professional debut after winning gold in Barcelona?" In spite of Merhcant's comments, Arencibia said - “my fighter, the current world champion at 122 pounds - “The Jackal” Rigondeaux - is ready to face the best in his division and for that reason we are unable to stop mentioning the name of Nonito Donaire” Tags: Guillermo Rigondeaux |

EDIT: Also, both reporters said they had Rigondeaux as their favorite as well.

From what I've read and watched, most known writers and boxers who've talked about this fight, favor Rigo by a large margin, including JMM, a real P4P, who was interviewed about this like 3 days ago.
It's funny how some people here don't understand the business. Stop dreaming, it won't happen. The truth is, like it or not, Donaire is the one not ready for Rigo and he'll never be. Knowing that, Arum, who's betting and investing on Donaire to be his next superstar, will NEVER risk him against R... |
