The team behind two-time Olympic gold medal winner Guillermo Rigondeaux have denied a recent claim that was made by trainer Freddie Roach, who told reporters that he was approached with an offer to train the Cuban fighter.
In an article that appeared on BoxingScene.com, Roach claimed that he received a joint offer to train Rigondeaux and heavyweight contender Luis Ortiz.
A few hours later, also on BoxingScene, Ortiz denied the information and said he was perfectly happy with trainer Herman Caicedo.
Caicedo is baffled as to why Roach would make such a comment.
"I don't know why he would say that, because on this side we are all united and there are no cracks," Caicedo said to George Ebro." Perhaps it is a lack of money, and he is throwing out bait to fish someone in. He used to have Lateef Kayode and said his fighter would destroy Luis, that Luis was an inferior boxer. Luis stunned Kayode, he has an interim title, and now look how it changes everything."
On the other side of things, Rigondeaux recently reunited with old trainer Pedro Diaz.
Rigondeaux had trained under Roach at the beginning of 2010, but left him in April of the same year. He complained that Roach gave the majority of his attention to other fighters and had him sparring with boxers who were 150 pounds.
Diaz looks forward to the upcoming camp with Rigondeaux and has no idea what Roach is talking about.
"During my breakfast I was hit with this news and I don't know anything about that," said Diaz. "My thing is to work hard and bring the boxer to a higher level. I'm with Rigondeaux and everything else does not interest me."
