Team Martinez: If Margarito Wins, Rematch is Possible

By Rick Reeno

Pablo Sarmiento, trainer of WBC Diamond middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (47-2-2, 26KOs), told BoxingScene.com that Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27KOs) is a lucrative option if the Mexican boxer is able to defeat Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29KOs) in their scheduled rematch on December 3rd in New York's Madison Square Garden. Margarito is the only man to beat Martinez by knockout, in seven rounds. The fight took place over ten years ago in February of 2000, and Martinez was an unbeaten 16-0 inexperienced prospect.

"We would be interested in that fight. We would want the winner, but [the Margarito loss] is like a thorn in the side for Sergio, and it would be a great fight if he's able to beat Cotto," Sarmiento told BoxingScene.com.

Martinez's promoter, Lou DiBella, had once told BoxingScene in an earlier interview that he was so confident that his boxer would win the rematch, that he would allow Margarito to wear "handwraps of choice."

I'd like to see Martinez vs Margarito again. Tony doesnt deserve it but it would be a good watch just to see him take his 3rd consecutive thrashing. It will be a masterclass and a painful one. Marg will plod…
It always makes me laugh how Puga thinks he's a knowledgeable boxing fan. He really thinks he's a good poster. Puga is as delusional as the guy he hates the most in Floyd Mayweather. :lol1:
dont front...everytime we debate, im…

Can't believe that scumbag Margarito is still managing to get paydays off of fighters he defeated. Let him walk, the best way to "beat" him is to blacklist him.
