A statement has been issued, by Marcos Maidana's team, to dispute numerous inaccurate stories with respect to a potential unification fight with WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. Several reports have stated that a deal has been finalized for Maidana to face Mayweather on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Those reports are not true. Recently, Mayweather put together an official poll to select his next opponent. The two choices were Amir Khan and Maidana. While Maidana held a strong early lead, Khan finished stronger with more than 60% of the final vote.
Although Khan is victorious in the official poll, Maidana is still very much in the running to face Mayweather in May.
Both Khan and Maidana are in training, as they both wait for Mayweather to make his official selection.
"Before different stories begin to circulate, and many questions begin coming in from friends, journalists and fans - we must inform them that Marcos “El Chino” Maidana has a good possibility of becoming the opponent of Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 3 in Las Vegas - although this is far from being confirmed."
"Maidana, like the rest of us, knows the situation and, obviously, we hope the fight happens. Of course, there will be news on our next fight in the next few days. Meanwhile, in order avoid generating confusion between the fans - we have to clarify, once again, that the fight is not finalized and we have not authorized anyone to confirm [that a deal was reached]."Tags: Floyd Mayweather Jr. , Marcos Maidana
