According to Omar Figueroa Sr., father and trainer of former champion Omar 'Panterita' Figueroa, his son is indeed targeting a ring return in April, at 140-pounds, against Ricky Burns, a two-division beltholder.
Earlier this week, Burns' promoter Eddie Hearn had confirmed negotiations were ongoing, with manager Al Haymon, for his boxer to face Figueroa in the United States. Figueroa has not been in action since his August knockout of Daniel Estrada. The former WBC lightweight champion suffered a bad cut in that much.
Figueroa Sr. spoke with Haymon about the future and he confirms that his son is a promotional free agent from Golden Boy Promotions.
"We're looking at his return in April, and he is training now. It would be at 140 pounds against Ricky Burns," Figueroa Sr. told ESPN Deportes. "We want to do the fight in the Valley of Texas, in Hidalgo, near McAllen, and the opponent being discussed to us is Ricky Burns but nothing is concrete."
