Team Cotto: The Margarito Rematch is Not Finalized Yet

In attempt to clarify the status of the Dec. 3 rematch between WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico and ex-titlist Antonio Margarito of Mexico, Cotto's legal adviser, Gabriel Penagaricano, told BoxingScene.com on Wednesday that the clash "is not made yet."

"Right now, Antonio Margarito is the only opponent that the promoter has offered, so we're dealing mainly with him," said Penagaricano.

"So as you know, we are working on the fight, and it's not made yet," said Penagaricano. "We are negotiating several aspects of it. But we are definitely into discussions for the fight for Dec. 3."

The match up between the 33-year-old Margarito (38-7, 27 knockouts) and the 30-year-old Cotto (36-2, 29KOs) is the return bout of a 2008 battle that ended with Margarito handing Cotto his first loss by 11th-round stoppage the MGM Grand.

"We haven't signed anything and there's no agreement made yet, but we're working to make the fight," said Penagaricano. "So in that sense, we are, as we always do in negotiations, considering the different aspects of the fight. We're simply going through the process."

In addition, Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum still has not chosen where the Cotto-Margarito II will take place -- New York's Madision Square Garden or the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Arum told BoxingScene.com that he was awaiting a proposal from the MGM on Wednesday, followed by the one from New York's Madision Square Garden on Thursday.

A former two-time welterweight and one-time junior welterweight champion, Cotto is 8-0, with three knockouts in New York.

"As for the location, both places are secured, but obviously, the East Coast is very attractive for Miguel. It's a place where he likes to be and where he likes to fight," said Penagaricano.

"But Miguel definitely will be paying attention to which location makes the most sense financially," said Penagaricano. "So I guess that the point is that he will look at both sides of the equation before making a decision on where he would like to fight."

Cotto 6-0 at Madison Square Garden, with four of those contests having taken place on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day Parade in June.

At the MGM Grand, Cotto is 5-2, with four KOs, ending with a 12th-round knockout of ex-world champion Ricardo Mayorga in his last fight in March.

"Naturally, you look at New York, historically, because of Miguel's draw and his popularity there. That's been humongous," said Penagaricano. "But I think that this will be a very attractive fight in both places, regardless of where it ends up."

The economy not doing good and this would be a big event. Any state will license him once the see how much revenue they can do in one night with the fight. It is just amazing that Margo hasn't won…
