TV station KOB in New Mexico reports that former champ Johnny Tapia plead guilty late Monday morning to a fourth-degree felony possession charge for cocaine. The charge stems from a March incident, where police found him in a motel room unconscious from an apparent drug overdose. Tapia spent three days in a Albuquerque hospital.
The charge Tapia faced usually carries a prison term of up to 18 months, but he was able to avoid doing any jail time by striking a with the District Attorney’s office. As a result of the deal, he was placed on probation. Tapai will also enter a drug treatement program, and build a boxing gym in Farmington to help kids.
