World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman has warned WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez that he can't make mistakes against a fighter with the skill level of Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs).
Canelo will defend the title against Khan on May 7th from the newly built T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Khan, a former champion at 140-pounds, is currently at welterweight and will move up by eight pounds to face Canelo at a catch-weight of 154-pounds.
Khan is a very big underdog in contest. Sulaiman sees him as a very worthy contender and says Canelo needs to apply the pressure from the opening bell.
"I feel that Canelo will have to apply pressure, be smart. Khan hits hard, the same as Canelo. I feel that Canelo must apply pressure and counter the strengths of his opponent," said Sulaiman.
Canelo is returning from the biggest win of his career, a twelve round unanimous decision win over Miguel Cotto last November in Las Vegas. Canelo (46-1-1, 32 KOs), should he win, would go into a fall fight with IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in the fall.
"Canelo has to win. He has to prove that he is the world champion. He had the best fight of his life against Cotto and he is positioned as the leader for Mexican boxing and one of the largest stars in the world. He will always get criticism from 'x' or 'y', but he is the champion."
"Amir Khan is a very worthy defense. Khan is former world champion, has extensive experience, has a high quality boxing and it will undoubtedly be a great fight."
