STUEY HALL has completed a remarkable transformation by becoming IBF world bantamweight king.

The 33-year-old Darlington fighter claimed a unanimous points win over South African Vusi Malinga in Leeds to claim the vacant belt.

Hall admits he went off the rails during five years as a beach bum in Ibiza after falling out of love with the sport.

Now, after getting his life back on track, he has joined Carl Froch, Scott Quigg and Ricky Burns as a British world champion.

Hall, who damaged an eye during the bout, said: "This has to be one of the best days of my life.

"I was determined to make the most of this opportunity and that's just what I did. I feel great."

Hall was given a surprise shot at the prize after Jamie McDonnell had been stripped of his title for refusing a mandatory fight with Malinga.

Malinga hurt Hall in the sixth and the Brit boxer's left eye was bloodied and closed from the seventh - but he battled on to victory.

He said: "I had to fight with my left eye closed and I just tried to use the jab and dig in. That's what world champions are made of."

Hall floored Malinga in the third round but the gutsy South African fought back and caused damage to the Brit in the later rounds.

Hall said: "When he got up and came back at me it showed just what a fighter he is.

"He is different class but it brought the best out of me. I had to pull out all the stops and it worked."

Hall now has 16 wins from 19 fights and said: "This is the best Christmas present I could have asked for. It proves my hard work and dedication, in getting myself back into shape after losing the plot, has worked."

Hall, who took the decision 117-110 on two scorecards and 116-111 on the third, added: "The crowd lifted me on a marvellous night I will never forget."

Yes, great fight. Dennis Hobson personally invited me to watch it ringside, and i have to say, i was glad to get the chance to see another British world champion being born.
That was one of the best fights of 2013.
Definitely was, shame 90% of NSB won't get to see it. Edit: boxing fans treat yourself if you didn't catch it
