Stevenson-Fonfara Early Results: Charlo, Alvarez Win Big

Bell Centre, Montreal, Canada - Jermell Charlo moved to within one fight of challenging for a 154 lb. title following a sound 12-round points win over Charlie Ohta in their semifinal eliminator.

Scores were 118-109 (twice) and 115-111 for Charlo, who scored his second landslide win of the year as he advances up the alphabet rankings.

The bout was one way for the most part, save for Charlo going down in round three - courtesy of a straight right hand that caught him while off balance - and a point deduction in round nine for excessive low blows.

Charlo was steady with his jab and straight right hand, causing swelling under both eyes of Ohta, a New Yorker who now lives and trains out of Tokyo, Japan.

With the win, Charlo (24-0, 11KO) advances to the #2 contender position in the International Boxing Federation (IBF) rankings. The super welterweight contender, where twin brother Jermall also competes, caps a big week that included his 24th birthday.

Ohta falls to 24-2-1 (16KO) with the loss. The 32-year old, who trains with tough-as-nails lightweight Nihito Arawaka, was unbeaten in his past 19 bouts dating back to 2008 prior to the elimination bout.

SHO EXTREME RESULTS

Hot junior middleweight contender Julian Williams (16-0-1, 10KOs) knocked out Michael Medina (26-5-2, 19KOs) in the eight round. Williams was outworking and outhitting Medina in the fight. Williams started doing some serious damage in the fourth, when he let his hands go and blasted away on Medina's head and body. In the second half of the contest, it was all Williams with the big shots, more accurate punches and far more combinations. During the eight, Williams landed three hard shots to put Medina down for the count.

Rising light heavyweight contender Eleider Alvarez (15-0, 8KO’s) won a ten round unanimous decision over Alexander Johnson (15-2, 6KO’s). All three judges saw it 97-92. The fight was fought at a slow pace for the most part. Alvarez scored a knockdown in the fifth, but didn't do much to follow-up. Alvarez outboxed Johnson the rest of the way with little to no resistance.

Johnson ineffective jab couldn't find the range with his punches. Alvarez needs to fight at a faster pace let his hands go more. Medina no head movement J-Rock couldn't miss like target practice
