Toowoomba amateur boxer and current 57kg Australian champion Steven Spark took out a close points decision in the main amateur bout at Mansfield tavern on Sunday afternoon.

Stepping up a division to take on the 60kg Australian champion Isaiah Farr, the fight went exactly as predicted turning into a war with the Smithy’s Gym boxer landing a few cleaner punches to narrowly secure the victory.

“It was a close and exciting fight with both boxers standing their ground and giving plenty,” said head Smithy’s Gym trainer Brendon Smith.

“Stevey boxed very well and did what he needed to do and Isaiah didn’t hand to him, he made Stevey work for the entire three rounds.”

This was the third encounter between the pair and now leaves Spark ahead with two victories over Isaiah in their trilogy.

Also, this continues the run of success Spark has had in 2012 with him now not only being the Australian 57kg Junior champion, but also holding victories over the 54kg and the 60kg Australian champion, proving him the dominant figure around those weight divisions in Australian amateur boxing.

Sam Williams, the other Smithy’s Gym amateur boxer to fight on the card suffered an extremely close defeat to Gold Coasts Jacob Ng. This was a very close fight with Williams displaying great defense and skills however the judges saw the work rate of Jacob Ng get him over the line and take the victory.

“I’m very proud of the Way Sammy fought and I think he will only be a better boxer with this one under his belt,” said trainer Brendon Smith.

Both fighters will be back in training and re join the rest of their team at Smithy’s Gym this week.
