Srisaket Sor Rungvisai-Carlos Cuadras Purse Bid Set, 2/7

By Jake Donovan

A 30-day negotiations period has been ordered by the World Boxing Council (WBC) between super flyweight titlist Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and mandatory challenger Carlos Cuadras, according to a recent statement Monday morning from their headquarters in Mexico City.

“A mandatory super flyweight title fight has been ordered between Rungvisai and Carlos Cuadras has been ordered,” WBC Executive Secretary Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed. “If an agreement cannot be reached (between camps) a purse bid will be ordered for February 7.”

Sor Rungvisai (23-3-1, 21KO) enjoys an improbable stay near the top of the 115 lb. division. The 27-year old Thai has won 22 straight following a 1-3-1 start to his career, including a 2013 campaign that saw him win the super flyweight crown with an 8th round knockout of Japan’s Yota Sato.

His lone title defense came last November, scoring a ninth round stoppage of Japanese southpaw Hirofumi Mukai in his native Thailand.

Included among his three losses is a 3rd round knockout loss in his pro debut versus Akira Yaegashi, who went on to capture a strawweight title and presently reigns as World lineal flyweight king.

Cuadras (29-0, 24KO) has waited well over a year for a shot at a title, after winning a “Silver” version of the belt in Sept. 2012. A 7th round knockout win over Ronald Barrera was supposed to put the unbeaten Mexican in position to challenge for the crown, but has since kept busy with wins over Fernando Lumacad and Victor Zaleta to further prepare for the pending opportunity.

His most recent fight on New Year’s Eve in Japan, scoring a 2nd round stoppage of overmatch Songsaekngklek Phosuwangym, a bout serving no other purpose to shake loose some cobwebs. The fight marked Caudras’ first since March, the near 10-month stretch serving as the longest period of inactivity in his still young career.

This has fireworks written all over it. I wonder if Cuadras is willing to go to Thailand or if this ends up happening in Japan. Either way its one of the best fights that can be made at 115
