BoxingScene.com has received confirmation from promoter Sampson Lewkowicz that former champion Marvin Sonsona (16-1-1, 13KOs) has suffered an injury in training and withdrew from a scheduled fight with Orlando Cruz (18-2-1, 9KOs). The featherweight bout was scheduled to take place on July 6th at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The card will be televised by ESPN's Friday Night Fights.
According to Lewkowicz, Sonsona suffered a back related injury. Although Lewkowicz refused to confirm, a third party source advised BoxingScene that Javier Fortuna (19-0, 14KOs), currently in the same camp as Sonsona, was presented as a possibly replacement and he was rejected by Cruz. However, there is a possibilty that Fortuna will appear on the undercard.
The promoters are currently trying to finalize a replacement for Sonsona.
