Shinsuke Yamanaka: record, next fight and profile →
On Tuesday, journalists from Tokyo and Osaka held their yearly voting process that was overseen by the JBC [Japan Boxing Commission], to select the most prominent fighters of 2013 in Japan. The ceremony to present the honored awards will take place on January 24 at the luxurious Tokyo Hotel in the Tokyo Dome.
Shinsuke Yamanaka racked up the fifth successful defense of his bantamweight title with a 9th round stoppage of Mexico's Alberto Guevara in their TV WOWOW-televised main event Sunday evening in Japan. Yamanaka overcame a rough start to eventually break down Guevara, scoring two knockdowns in the eighth round before finishing off the visiting challenger with a third knockdown early in round nine.
The final press conference was held at the Hotel Grand Palace in Tokyo, Japan - for the big event scheduled for November 10th at the Kokugikan Arena. The bantamweight champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Japan's Shinsuke Yamanaka (19-0-2, 14KOs), will be defending his title against Mexican challenger, Alberto "Metro" Guevara (18-1, 6 KOs)
WBC International silver bantamweight champion Alberto Guevara (18-1-16 KOs) arrived in Japan to face full WBC bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka (19-0-2, 14 KOs) on November 10 at the Sumo Arena in Tokyo. Yamanaka will try to defend the title he conquered over Mexican Christian Esquivel by TKO last November 2011 in Tokyo, Japan. Guevara assured that he’s ready physically and mentally to dethrone Yamanaka.
It was easy to get spoiled for a while. Fans of lighter weight divisions saw Bantamweight come alive in recent years. Fans were seeing a deep pool deeply challenged. The best 118 lb. fighters appearing on Showtime, and the best seen on HBO, never squared off to seal the era. It didn’t matter. The Abner Mares-Vic Darchinyan-Yonnhy Perez-Joseph Agbeko round robin played out on one network with the Nonito Donaire show on the other. Life was good. When Panama’s Anselmo Moreno was mixed in later against Darchinyan, life was even better. The lineal Bantamweight title, vacant since the 1980s, remained so but the depth of fighters and fights made up for the lack of a finishing touch. The action continued up to 122 where we got Mares-Moreno, more Donaire show, and finally Donaire-Guillermo Rigondeuax.
Less than 36 hours after Anselmo Moreno returned to the ring with a dominant performance, the long-reigning titlist was served an emphatic reminder that the title of world’s best bantamweight is still very much up for grabs. Shinsuke Yamanaka made the fourth defense of his version of the bantamweight crown, knocking out Jose Nieves in one round Monday evening in Tokyo, Japan. A straight left hand was enough to put the visiting Puerto Rican challenger down and out, unofficially at 2:40 of round one.
Akira Yaegashi scored a well-earned unanimous decision over Oscar Blanquet for the first successful defense of his World flyweight championship Monday evening in Tokyo, Japan. The fan-friendly slugfest served as a fitting primer to Shinsuke Yamanaka’s bantamweight title defense versus Puerto Rico’s Jose Nieves, which headlines the show.
Jose Nieves has touched down in Tokyo, exactly one week ahead of his August 12 title challenge against unbeaten Shinsuke Yamanaka. The bout marks the first time Nieves (22-2-3, 11KO) fights for a major title, as well as his first prizefight outside of the United States or his native Puerto Rico. “I’m excited for this opportunity,” said Nieves, who arrived with his team - trainer Jose Bonilla, cutman Luis Brenas, Ruben De Jesus and Felix “Tutiking” Zabala III of All Star Boxing, Inc - on Monday afternoon, local time. “I have tremendous respect for (Yamanaka), but I am ready for this fight and prepared to become the bantamweight champion of the world.”
Jose Nieves (22-3-2, 11 KO's) will travel to Japan on August 3 where on the 12th of that month he will be fighting for 118-pound title of the World Boxing Council (WBC) against champion Shinzuke Yamanaka ( 18-0-2 and 13 KO's). Nieves, ranked seventh, is trained by Jose Bonilla and his career has seen a resurgence by fighting in the state of Florida with the promotional company All Star Boxing, which is chaired by president Felix 'Tutico' Zabala. Nieves' last loss came in 2010 in four rounds against Chris Avalos.
Shinsuke Yamanaka (18-0, 13KOs) and Akira Yaegashi will put their World Boxing Council titles on the line in a doubleheader in August in Tokyo, it was announced Monday. Yamanaka will make the fourth defense of his bantamweight title when he faces No. 7-ranked Jose Nieves (22-2-3, 11KOs) of Puerto Rico on Aug. 12 at the Ota Ward Gym. Yaegashi (17-3, 9KOs), a former WBA minimumweight champ who secured the WBC flyweight belt by beating Toshiyuki Igarashi in April, will take on Mexico’s 11th-ranked Oscar Blanquet (32-5-1, 23KOs) in his first title defense.
