According to source close to the situation, there soon may be a little shakeup in the camp of middleweight champion Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez.
It appears as though Gabriel Sarmiento, the former trainer of Martinez, is set to be released from jail in his native Spain sometime in March.
Sarmiento’s initial arrest, for aggravated battery, took place on March 4th of 2011 in Los Angeles, as Martinez was just a week away from an 8th round TKO victory over Sergiy Dzinziruk. Days after his initial arrest, Sarmiento was taken to Spain and has since been locked up while his younger brother Pablo has filled his place in the head trainer role.
Very little has been said about Gabriel Sarmiento over the past few years and there seemed to be more questions than answers concerning his battery charge.
But, while one would think it would be good news for Martinez to hear of Gabriel’s release, there appears to be a little drama brewing behind the scenes. It turns out that Pablo has gotten very used to the role of head trainer and has loved the spotlight that has come with training one of the sport’s biggest stars.
“Pablo went Hollywood,” said our source. “He fell in love with the attention.”
The insider added that there may be a bit of a feud brewing between the Sarmiento brothers as to who will be the main man in Martinez’s corner for future bouts.
Stay tuned for more.
