WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28KOs) is still recovering from several injuries suffered in his last defense against Martin Murray, but he wants to face the best possible opponent when he returns - likely in 2014. The fight that interests him the most is the winner of the upcoming clash between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr., taking place on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Facing the winner would require Martinez to move down to the junior middleweight limit of 154 or catch-weight in the middle.
"It is a very good option for me (to wait for the winner of that night). Floyd is the best fighter pound for pound, and Canelo, if he wins, would become one of the best pound for pound fighters. My idea is to always fight the best, not turn away from anyone and I would be ready to face the winner," Martinez said.
"It's a tough fight for both of them. Floyd has the experience, but you can not dismiss Canelo, who has the characteristics of a puncher. Floyd may be the favorite, but not by a very wide margin."
