Sergio Martinez Returns on March 17, Macklin is Likely

By Rick Reeno

Boxing adviser/promoter Sampson Lewkowicz advised BoxingScene.com that WBC Diamond middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27KOs) will return on March 17th.

The current frontrunner for the opponent's position is Matthew Macklin (28-3, 19KOs), who recently signed a promotional agreement with Lou DiBella, who also promotes Martinez.

"Martinez is going to return on March 17. That's the date we received from HBO. Right the opponent is likely going to be Macklin," Lewkowicz told BoxingScene.com.

Macklin's position as frontrunner could be knocked off, if Floyd Mayweather Jr., Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or Manny Pacquiao come to the table, said Lewkowicz.
