If you would’ve asked boxing fans a year ago who would win between Middleweight Kingpin Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, the majority of people who pick Martinez without a second thought.
Fast forward to today where a fight between them is finally on the horizon and it is now not such a foregone conclusion to most. Chavez has improved and his significant size advantage over most of his opponents has become more evident and an important factor. The fight is now considered a much closer affair and has made this anticipated showdown even that much more enticing.
When Sergio Martinez spoke to BoxingScene’s official radio show The Boxing Lab, he was asked what his thoughts were regarding those who now feel his match up with Chavez is a much closer contest.
“Easy it won’t be” said Martinez. “But I will have a great triumph and those that think Chavez can beat me are totally mistaken”.
Martinez is determined to beat his rival who he’s been chasing for over a year. He’s promised to knock Chavez out and Chavez in return promised the same. With so much emotion and hostility invested, one has to wonder if Martinez may get careless or be over aggressive and have it work against him in the fight.
“It doesn’t worry me. On the contrary, I know I’m very motivated and I’m dangerous when I’m motivated. My job is to look for the knockout and this fight won’t be the exception” Martinez would tell The Boxing Lab.
In a fight most thought we would never see Chavez is putting his undefeated record, WBC world title, and the risk of taking a popularity hit if he were to lose such a high profile fight. Martinez has been the victim of bad decisions before and the thought of him being able to get a decision in this fight comes to mind. But on Martinez’s part, he’s not worried about it.
“Now days I have more experience. And aside from experience, I have the capacity, motivation, and the hunger to go and win by knockout. There will be no other judges in the ring except my two fists”.
