Schaefer Likes The Idea of Amir Khan vs. Luis Collazo

By Rick Reeno

Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, likes the idea of a welterweight fight between former champion Luis Collazo (35-5, 18KOs) and British star Amir Khan (28-3, 19KOs).

On Wednesday, Collazo's longtime trainer Nirmal Lorick told that his fighter is ready, willing, and able to face Khan as soon as possible.

Khan, inactive since last April's tough win over Julio Diaz, was a frontrunner to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 3rd. Last week, Mayweather passed him over and selected Marcos Maidana as the pay-per-view opponent.

Collazo is coming off a very hot win. In January, Collazo did the unexpected by pulling off a one-punch first round knockout of former champion Victor Ortiz at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Khan wants a "credible opponent" at welterweight, and Schaefer is very interested in the idea of a fight with Collazo.

"Luis Collazo had a big win a month or so ago in New York against Victor Ortiz. He's been waiting for these types of opportunities and he let me know as well that he wants Amir Khan. I think it is a fascinating matchup," Schaefer told

"Luis is a strong, big welterweight. For Amir to move up and potentially fight someone like Luis Collazo, a natural welterweight, I think it will be an interesting challenge. I haven't talked to Amir about it or his team, or his trainer Vigril, but as a fight fan I can see it being a very entertaining fight and a very interesting fight."
true Devon has lost his appeal, but he is still a better win than Collazo (thats if Khan wins)
true, but realistically what makes more sense for khan? *and any word on Shawn Porter? I heard something about April 6th…

Collazo will not be hurt by Amir. However; If Khan can maintain discipline, this should be easy night for him. On the other hand, when does Khan display discipline? Tough call.

This fight is just OK, you can't call it an amazing fight or a crappy one. Its a fight which Khan can lose or look very good in, but if Colazo is going to be it, they should have looked…

Collazo, I like he closed the book on Ortiz, but that's not saying much. I'm pretty sure light hitting Paulie Mags could have done the same thing. Have Collazo AND Khan notch it up in challenges, just not with one…
