During his recent business trip to the UK, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer expressed his interest in signing up 2012 Olympic gold medal winner Anthony Joshua. The super heavyweight is fielding offers from all over the globe after capturing gold at the London games. Golden Boy is looking to branch out by promoting a regular series of events in the UK and a fighter like Joshua would be perfect for their stable.
Schaefer told The Sun: I want to bring the Golden Boy brand here and start promoting fights. Its going to happen. Joshua is a terrific fighter. He is the total package and I think he is going to have an opportunity to eventually become the heavyweight champion of the world.
We currently have the Klitschko brothers dominating, but in my opinion they are more the champions of Europe. They have totally failed to capture the US market and I think Joshua, with his style and personality, has the opportunity to become the standard for boxing. He can bring the general market back to the heavyweight division and has tremendous, tremendous potential.
The division is in a chokehold by Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko and I dont mean that with any disrespect to them. There is nobody who can beat those guys. But from a marketing point of view, they should be much bigger. The make maybe $8 million from every fight but then you look at someone like Floyd Mayweather who has the potential to make up to $50 million. Joshua can really relight the fire in the heavyweight division.
