BoxingScene.com caught up with WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at the press conference for Saturday's fight between Erik Morales and Marcos Maidana that takes place at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Alvarez made his Las Vegas debut last May when he defeated Jose Cotto via TKO on the undercard to the Floyd Mayweather-Shane Mosley mega-fight.
Canelo is set to return on June 18th in his native Guadalajara, Mexico. The fight will be his first title defense and his likely opponent is Ryan Rhodes although a deal hasn't been finalized as of yet.
BoxingScene asked the fighter who enjoys rock star status in Mexico about his has plans for the rest of 2011. Part of those plans will include Alvarez headlining his first fight card in Las Vegas.
"It looks like I will be fighting in Las Vegas in September. We are taking it one fight at a time but the plan is for it to happen in September."
Alvarez's promoter started a tradition of fighting on Mexican Independence Day weekend in Las Vegas and it appears that the torch has been passed to Canelo.
