Sauerland Protests WBA's Decision on Klitschko-Povetkin

By Alexander Pavlov

The World Boxing Association has received a protest from promoter Kalle Sauerland of Sauerland Event, who disagrees with their recent resolution to the situation between unified heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and WBA "regular" champion Alexander Povetkin.

The WBA granted Klitschko's application to make a voluntary defense on April 6th. Povetkin is the mandatory challenger and the WBA had previously ordered Wladimir to face him.

There was one condition, the WBA would have to receive a signed contract for a figh between Klitschko and Povetkin by the deadline of February 28. If they don't reach a deal, then Klitschko vs. Povetkin will head to a purse bid on March 18. If a deal is reached, then the fight must be held by the end of July.

The WBA also ordered that a purse bid would see a split of 75% for Klitschko and 25% for Povetkin 25%. In the event Klitschko loses in April, then Povetkin will see an even 50-50 split with the new champion.

Sauerland is not very happy with the proposed split. It would place Sauerland in the position of dropping a heavy bid and Klitschko standing to receive the majority of the money.

Klitschko's team have also expressed some disagreement with the WBA's order. They do not agree with the WBA's ruling that Wladimir has to reach an agreement with Povetkin before the April voluntary.
Povetkin's team wasting Vlad's time as usual
Yes. I believe Povetkin's management has no intentions of letting him fight Wlad unless they win the purse bid and so can use their own referees and judges.
