Abel Sanchez, head trainer for WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs), believes Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs) is fixated with his fighter.

Mayweather, a former five division world champion, retired from the sport last September after dominating Andre Berto over twelve rounds at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

In multiple interviews over the last few months, Mayweather discussed his confidence in being able to beat a fighter like Golovkin. He feels Golovkin has no 'special effects' about him.

Prior to Mayweather's retirement, the fans were pushing for him to fight Golovkin - especially after Golovkin said he would move down to 154, where Mayweather held the WBC/WBA world titles. Golovkin says Mayweather is the only opportunity he would consider move down to fight.

In his opinion, Sanchez thinks Mayweather is making these types of comments to lay down the groundwork for a potential ring return - against Golovkin or someone else.

"He is saying things about a comeback, he just seems to be fixated on Golovkin. I’ve seen three or four pieces in the last couple of weeks where he’s talking about beating Golovkin, it looks like he’s laying the ground work for something, whether it’s Golovkin or somebody else. Floyd’s laying the ground works for a comeback," Sanchez told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.

"I think you lay the ground work, you say things to see how people react, you say things to see if it’s something that the public wants and he’s gauging that. We’ve always known that Floyd was a great businessman, so it’s all part of a plan for him. There’s nothing that he says or does that is not calculated."

Golovkin returns on April 23rd in a mandatory title defense against unbeaten Dominic Wade at The Forum in Los Angeles, California.
