Over the past few years WBA/IBF/IBO/WBC interim champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) has been one of the busiest champions in the sport. He has consistently fought three to four times a year in in an era where most champions fight twice a year.

2016 could be a less active year for Triple G. For starters he couldn't pencil in a fight until the status of his mandatory fight against full WBC middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez was resolved. That lead to him having to wait until April 23rd for his first ring appearance of the New Year.

With his second fight of the year slated for a date in September, it may be difficult for Golovkin to get a third fight in.

"Well I hope we get three in," Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez told BoxingScene.com. "They are talking about Canelo sometime in September and before the end of the year we hope to get another one in and if we do that, it is a great year.

"Our goal has always been to fight him a minimum of 3 and hopefully 4 times but the way that these HBO and TV dates come about it is difficult to get the fights that you want in but I want him as busy as possible. He is 33 years old.  By the time we fight Canelo he will be 34 so the busier he stays the better it is for not only us as coaches in the gym but for him and also the fans who get to enjoy his fights that much more."
