Abel Sanchez, trainer of WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs), says his fighter would still be willing to drop down to the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds for a bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs).
Mayweather retired in September after winning a twelve round unanimous decision. There are still pending rumors that he might entertain a return, to chase his 50th win, in 2016.
The issue of weight has been a hot topic in recent weeks. Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to the winner of Miguel Cotto vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, which takes place on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Both Cotto and Canelo are unwilling to meet Golovkin at the full middleweight division limit of 160-pounds. Canelo has already requested a catch-weight of 155. Golovkin, as the mandatory challenger, rejected the idea of a catch-weight.
Should the Cotto-Canelo winner refuse to comply with the WBC's order, then Golovkin - as the interim-champion of the organization - will be elevated to the status of full champion.
"Golovkin has stated many times in the past that the Floyd Mayweather fight would be his dream fight and he’s the only one that he would come down to 154-pounds for, the only one that he would come down for by choice, not by being forced. If Floyd decides to come back and decides that’s who he wants, Gennady would make all efforts to try to accommodate him," Sanchez told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
