Ray Narh, coming off a two-year layoff, simply outworked the listless Ronald Cruz, who avg'd just 40 punches thrown per round. Narh threw as many jabs as Cruz did total punches.

It was two years since Ray Narh’s last fight and even longer since he ever came close to living up to his ‘Emperor’ nickname. The Ghana-born, Bronx-based boxer certainly looked like royalty on Friday evening, however, in easily turning back the challenge of once promising prospect Ronald Cruz. Narh picked up his first win in 27 months, doing so in hostile territory in dominating Cruz in his opponent’s hometown of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Cruz was coming off of the first defeat of his career, anxious to resume his winning ways and remain a fixture on the NBC Sports Network Fight Night series. The opportunity was there for Cruz to shine; he was fighting at home, on his promoter’s (Main Events) show and against an opponent whose own travel issues disallowed him to even arrive in town in time for Wednesday’s pre-fight press conference.

In the opening bout of the telecast, Ray Narh pulled off a major upset with a surprisingly dominant points win over house favorite Ronald Cruz. Scores were 100-90, 98-92 and 96-94.

Both land above weight class avg. for power punches. Narh much busier with the jab. He'll need that stick to hold off Cruz, who needs to get close to be effective. 70% of Cruz's thrown punches are power shots.

Ronald Cruz returns to familiar surroundings, however under unfamiliar circumstances. The welterweight prospect faces Ray Narh this Friday in his hometown of Bethlehem, PA, as part of NBC Sports Network’s televised tripleheader. Those are the areas of familiarity for Cruz, but he enters the fight on the heels of the first defeat of his pro career, which he suffered last September at the hands of divisional trialhorse Antwone Smith. Cruz (17-1, 12KO) plays the Sands Casino for the fourth time in his young career, including his third straight fight at the local resort. Regardless of who has appeared on past cards, the Puerto Rican has drawn the loudest applause in the room. Early pre-fight buzz suggests more of the same can be expected this weekend, even in coming off of a nine-month layoff and the humbling defeat.

Entertaining fight. Antwone Smith gets the decision in Ronald Cruz's hometown. They combined to landed 67 of 171 total punches in round ten.

Antwone Smith won a razor-thin split decision in an upset over unbeaten hometown favorite Ronald Cruz in their 10-round televised co-feature. Smith made up for missing weight yesterday by jumping out to an early start, which proved to be too much for Cruz to overcome, even fighting five minutes from home. Scores were 96-94 (twice) for Smith and 96-94 for Cruz. The bout is the first loss for Cruz, while Smith breathes new life into his previously fading career.
