Roman Martinez vs. Juan Carlos Burgos Likely Up Next

By Jhonny Gonzalez

The next step for the newly crowned WBO super featherweight champion, Roman Martinez (26-1-1, 16KOs), is likely a mandatory defense against Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1, 20KOs), according to Martinez's promoter Peter Rivera of Puerto Rico Best Boxing.

Martinez won the title last Saturday in Las Vegas with a close twelve round split decision over Miguel Beltran Jr. Martinez-Burgos should take place in the next 90 days.

"Part of the commitment is to make a fight in the next 90 days. And we have to look for the fight with the number one ranked [contender] and that is Juan Carlos Burgos, a fighter who many know and has defeated Luis Cruz," Rivera told Carlos Narvaez.
