Roman Martinez Hopes To End Burgos' Bid By Knockout

By Jhonny Gonzalez

Roman "Rocky" Martinez is not feeling any pressure as he prepares to enter the ring this Saturday night at the Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York. Martinez will defend his junior lightweight (130 pounds) championship of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) against Mexico's Juan Carlos Burgos. The fight will be televised live as part of a tripleheader on HBO.

Burgos (30-1, 19KOs) has promised to knock Martinez out, but the champion is also focused on winning the contest by knockout.

"I feel no pressure. I am eager to fight. It's a motivation to be here in New York, where other great Puerto Rican boxers have fought like (Felix)" Tito "Trinidad and Miguel Cotto. It is an experience for me and I also part of my legacy," Martinez (26-1-1, 16 KO) said to Lester Jiminez. "[Burgos] will find [the knockout]. Actually, I hope that the fight will end by knockout, but it's going to come from me.

"This training has been more intense and much stronger. The sparring has been different ... we had 115 rounds of sparring. This fight I can not lose. I want to look good in front of people of Puerto Rico, the people here in New York and in front of HBO."

I expect fireworks in this fight but I would be surprised if either of them scored the ko.
