Roberto Marroquin Tops 12/17 Edition of ‘Top Rank Live’

Dallas-based super bantamweight prospect Roberto Marroquin will headline the December 17 edition of ‘Top Rank Live’ on Fox Deportes, which will take place at the Winstar Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma.

Marroquin (20-1, 14KO) takes on divisional spoiler Carlos Valcarcel in the ten-round main event, which figures to be the year’s final edition of Top Rank Live.

The venue serves as a return to the scene of the crime for Marroquin, who suffered the lone loss of his career at this very location earlier this year. The 22-year old landed in the middle of a gruesome war with Francisco Leal over ten rounds, but landed on the wrong end of a widely scored split decision in their April encounter.

He has since returned to the win column, scoring a wide decision win over durable trialhorse Jose Angel Beranza this past July.

Valcarcel (12-3-4, 5KO) might not always win at the top level, but rarely if ever does the Puerto Rican – now based out of Miami – ever give a poor account of himself. He enters the fight coming off of a competitive loss to Jayson Velez this past July in their Telefutura-televised main event.

The 30-year old has been stopped just once in seven year career, suffering a sixth round body shot knockout at the hands of Eric Morel in their April ’08 pay-per-view preliminary bout. Valcarcel appeared well on his way to a major upset before Morel bit down and dropped Valcarcel twice in the sixth round, the second knockdown forcing the stoppage.

Marroquin was originally scheduled to appear on the undercard of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s middleweight title defense against Peter Manfredo on Saturday in Houston.

However, his handlers – promoter Top Rank and manager Lou Mesorana – agreed that he was better served headlining his own show next month and in front of the camera.
