Robert Helenius Turns Back Late Sub Orlov in Tallinn

By Per Ake Persson

Finnish heavyweight Robert Helenius (25-1, 16 KOs) stopped giant Russian Evgeny Orlov tonight in Tallinn (Estonia). The fight was stopped after six rounds when Orlov refused to come out for round seven.

Orlov came in as a last minute sub last night when Brit Ian Lewison didn´t have permission to fight - but apparently flew to Tallinn anyway. Orlov is a big man, often around 300 lbs, and while out of shape he can still give anyone a hard night´s work and that is what happened tonight.

Cuban-Finnish light heavyweight Dayron Lester stopped one Deniss Paramovanin in one and Finnish light heavyweight champ Timo Laine TKO´d Dzianis Yahoranka in two.

IN OTHER NEWS: Fringe lightweight contender Tony Luis could be one step closer to fighting for a world title belt.

He must get by an unbeaten foe tonight.

Luis faces Cam O'Donnell in a 10 round bout at the Civic Complex in his hometown of Cornwall, Ontario, Canada.

Luis (23-3, with 8 KOs) has won his last four bouts since losing to then-interim WBA lightweight titleholder Derry Mathews.

In his last bout on April 15, Luis stopped Noe Nunez of Mexico after the sixth round.

O'Donnell (15-0-1, with 10 KOs), who hails from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, has stopped four of his last five opponents.

Unbeaten lightweight Will Madera (9-0, with 4 KOs) squares off against Rolando Mendivil (10-3, with 3 KOs) in a six round bout.

This win over Orlov got him the vacant WBC Silver title which usually makes the champion the #1 WBC contender. I doubt a win over Orlov will get him that but he should be a candidate for Wilder or possibly…
