Robert Guerrero Denies Father’s Antics a Distraction

By Ryan Maquiñana

Far from a shrinking violet, Ruben Guerrero made headlines recently by calling Danny Garcia’s father and trainer Angel a “punk” and how he wouldn’t mind trading fists with him in the future.

Ruben almost came to blows with Floyd Mayweather Sr. in a feud that started in the buildup to their sons’ May 2013 pay-per-view clash. Usually, such talk from a trainer in the middle of camp could be considered a distraction, but when the fighter is his son, Robert, it’s par for the course.

“Nah, it doesn’t affect anything,” Robert Guerrero said in a Tuesday conference call to promote Saturday’s Showtime-televised welterweight bout with Yoshihiro Kamegai. “He’s like that on a daily basis, so it’s pretty much just that the cameras are following him around now. You’re getting it on footage so everyone can see.

“He does his thing. I’m focused on what I gotta do. He’s focused on what I got do. He knows when to turn it on and when it turn it off. I’m happy the way camp went. Everything went good.”
