World class boxing trainer Robert Garcia is staying out of the feud between his pupil Nonito Donaire and Top Rank. Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank are currently in the middle of a legal battle over the services of the bantamweight champion. Many of Garcia's fighters such as Antonio Margarito, his brother Mikey Garcia and WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios fight under the Top Rank promotional banner.
"Most of my fighters including my brother Mike are promoted by Top Rank. Top Rank has done a good job for them so I have nothing bad to say about Top Rank. They are great company," Garcia told BoxingScene.com.
At the same time Garcia understands that boxing is a business and that his fighters have to do what is in there best interest. "I support Nonito in whatever he decides to do. They have to do what is best for them."
Garcia also said that Golden Boy is a top notch organization and feels that they will do a good with Donaire. Garcia said all of his experiences with the Los Angeles based company have been positive. "I have a few fighters under Golden Boy. They are younger guys, prospects. I consider Oscar de la Hoya a friend. Top Rank and Golden Boy both do a good job."
HBO is holding May 28th open for The Filipino star's next fight. It remains to be seen whether Donaire will be able to fight on that date as his promotional status could still be in litigation which may leave him on the shelf until it is resolved.
