Robert Garcia: Mares Deserves Nonito Donaire Fight

By Ryan Burton

Probable 2012 Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia is very pleased with WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire's performance from last Saturday against former 5 division champion Jorge Arce.  Garcia feels that his fighter is performing at a level that is on par with the best in the sport.

"I thought he was sensational.  He is one of the best, if not the best in the world.  He is very dedicated in the gym.  He is very smart in the ring and he did what he had to do," Garcia commented on Donaire's perfomance.

After the fight Arce announced that his retirement from the sport. He said that he wanted to fight the best out there and that he considered the Filipino to be the best.  Arce said that it was an honor for him to end his career against a fighter the caliber of Donaire.  I relayed Arce's thoughts to Garcia who had nothing but good things to say about the Sinaloa, Mexico native.

"We feel the same way about him.  For him to go out like that I give him a lot of credit.  He has been a tremendous warrior in boxing and given us a lot of great fights.  It was a great honor for us too for him to go out against us," Garcia told BoxingScene.

Garcia said that all of the decision making in regards to Donaire's future opponents are left to his manager Cameron Dunkin and his promoter Top Rank.  However he did say that he would welcome fights against champions Abner Mares and Guillermo Rigondeaux.

"I leave that up to Cameron and Top Rank.  They pick the fights and I get him ready for those fights.  I think Mares deserves the fight.  Rigondeaux is out there too.  Donaire is willing to face all of those guys," Garcia stated.

They don't want no part of Rigo, the Technician, counter-puncher WITH power. More powerful than Mares. They're only interested in fighter coming forward all the time opening their selves up. Some of you fools are blind is funny. Rigo has…
