Amir Khan's last performance made a big impression on veteran trainer Robert Garcia. Khan (30-3, 19KOs) dominated former two division world champion Devon Alexander over twelve rounds last December at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Prior to that match, Khan dominated former champion Luis Collazo.
Trainer Virgil Hunter is tightening up Khan's defense and has him significantly cutting back on taking unnecessary chances. Khan would often leave himself open during exchanges, which led to disaster in the ring.
Garcia trains two welterweight contenders, Brandon Rios and Marcos Maidana. He believes Khan would trouble anybody in the weight division - including the two boxers Khan is chasing - Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
"Amir Khan is one that can give any of those guys difficulties, because he's too fast, he throws too many punches. He's very fast, he throws too many punches - and if he just uses his reach, like he did in his last fight, and just moves around throws straight 1-2 [punches] - he will give anybody trouble," Garcia said.
"I don't know if it's because of Virgil Hunter [that he keeps a good defense]...but it has be because he wasn't doing that before. Before he would just go in and take chances and that's why he got caught and that's why he got knocked out. If you're a fighter who doesn't take a good punch - fight smart, move around and win the fight like [Khan] did in his last fight - it was very impressive."
