Macau, China - Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach was "disappointed" with the performance of Chris Algieri on Saturday night. Roach's main fighter, WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, dropped Algieri six times to win a dominating twelve round unanimous decision. It was one of the most lopsided decisions in a pay-per-view main event. Pacquiao was ahead by 18 points on one card (120-102) and 16 points on the remaining two tallies (119-103).
Algieri, although undefeated and the WBO champion at 140-pounds, has only 8 knockouts to his record and frustration grew as he was unable to hurt Pacquiao with his best punches.
Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, is still very much eager to finalize a deal between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Roach says Mayweather is the preferred opponent of choice, but promoters have been unable to reach a deal for the last three years.
If the Mayweather discussions fall apart, Roach believe Danny Garcia (29-0, 17KOs), the WBC/WBA champion at 140, would be a perfect opponent for Pacquiao at either 140 or a similar catch-weight as used for Algieri (144-pounds).
"He has interest in fighting Pacquiao. [Pacquiao is] where the money is and everyone wants to make more money. There is interest there," Roach said.
"I think he's an exciting fighter, he's a puncher, he will go for the knockout. He will swing as hard as he can. He's a little bit wild. If you box him the smart way I think he's beatable, but if you stand and trade with him he's very dangerous. It's a good fight, it's a good fight for the fans I feel."
