WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto was looking in top form for his showdown with Daniel Geale happening Saturday in Brooklyn, New York at the Barclays Center. Cotto worked out for the media for about a half hour and what many left with from the workout was the thudding body shots Cotto was hitting his trainer Freddie Roach with on the mitts. Roach says his power is there and ready for Saturday night.
“That body protector doesn’t help that much I need a bigger one,” Roach told BoxingScene.com “But he’s doing good, the body shot and the mitt shots, the power is there.”
Much has been made during fight week regarding the catch weight of 157 in a bout for the lineal and WBC World Middleweight Title. A catch weight of 157 figures to favor the smaller Cotto and put the natural middleweight Geale at a disadvantage. BoxingScene.com reported that there was no financial penalty should Geale not honor the catch-weight. But Roach says there is a backup plan should Geale not make weight.
“The thing is he has a contract and it should be honored but in today’s day and age it doesn’t seem like things are honored all the time,” stated the trainer. “Thing was when I was a fighter, we did but things change a little bit. I’m not too sure what he’s going to weigh but if he comes in overweight, we got some guys to back him up. We got replacements believe me, we did cover all our bases.”
