Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach gave his take on the fantasy matchup between recently retired pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs) and WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs).
Mayweather retired from the ring in September after beating Andre Berto over twelve rounds. Prior to his retirement, Golovkin said he was willing to drop down to the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds for a dream fight with Mayweather, who held the WBC/WBA belts in that division.
Roach has yet to match any of his fighters against Golovkin, but he has gone up against Mayweather.
Some believe Golovkin would be too big, too strong and likely knocks Mayweather out. Roach believes the opposite. He think Mayweather will be too quick and too defensive, and picks him to box his way to a decision win.
"Floyd outboxes him. [Mayweather] has never been knocked out as a professional fighter, so what makes this guy any different. He's a good puncher, but I'm sure Floyd has faced a lot of good punchers in his lifetime, from the amateurs to pros. Has [Mayweather] been down once? But not too many guys hurt [Mayweather], so I would pick Floyd to win that fight," Roach said.
