Roach: Does Canelo Have a Shot? I Don't Think So

By Luis Sandoval

The biggest fight of the year is still a couple months away but everyone appears to have their own take on the bout between Floyd Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez taking place on September 14th. Mayweather is the sport’s number one fighter while Canelo is the young and hungry Mexican superstar trying to reach the next level.

Renowned trainer Freddie Roach was at the Wild Card Gym Thursday afternoon for his newest fighter Zou Shiming’s media workout and was asked for his take on the fight between Mayweather and Alvarez.

“I think that is a very, very good boxing match. It’s not a great fight; it’s a good boxing match. Mayweather is a beautiful boxer and I think Mayweather will win a decision in that fight. I think a boxing fan will really like that fight but some people at home that like action might fall asleep. But it’s a great boxing match” Roach would share with several media members.

Mayweather, like in all his fights, is the heavy favorite to win this showdown. Alvarez is considered the bigger and stronger fighter but Roach doesn’t believe that will be enough to give him the victory.

“Well you know [Alvarez is] a pretty good puncher and a tough guy. But does he have a chance at beating Mayweather? I don't think so. I like Canelo and I hope he does well” said Roach.

Roach will be involved in his own big fight later this  year in November where his most prized pupil Manny Pacquiao will be taking on tough Brandon Rios in a fight that’s a must win for Pacquiao.

Under normal circumstance Floyd would win easily. He probably will anyway. But he is less mobile. Maybe Canelo can reach him, but Floyd will probably deflect a lot of it. Canelo's not even the best 154 pounder, I don't think…
I'm not gonna discredit a win simply because of how skilled a fighter is, doesn't work like that for me. I look at how talented the opponent is, his standing in the division and I go from there. The fact…
The thing is that you answered why Floyd is facing him in your previous post. Canelo is flat-footed. So Floyd knows he can move around the ring relatively easily. That plus the other issues we know of about Canelo make…
Why are you such a hater tho? [B][U]If Floyd wins then his fans have all right to celebrate and TURN UP all they want. It was just a few months ago when people were saying Floyd didn't have the SACK…
If Roach thought Pacman had a chance, I wouldn't really take him seriously. Canelo has a far better shot right now than Pac ever did.
I disagree. Canelo is really basic slow and predictable compared to Pacquiao. [I]Posted…
