WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KOs) is very happy that everything fell into place for his unification with WBO champion Nonito Donaire. The match is going to happen on April 13th in New York, Texas or California. HBO will televise the match. There has been talk of making this match at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Top Rank tried to place it in Madison Square Garden, but the venue was unavailable.
"The Garden is occupied on that date, so we have to look elsewhere, preferably in New York, but can't rule out Los Angeles and Texas," said Top Rank rep Ricardo Jiminez.
Rigondeaux, the two-time Olympic gold medal winner, was trying to get this match for a long time, but his co-promoters, Caribe Promotions and Top Rank, were involved in a legal dispute. Their issues were resolved on Saturday.
"I am very happy that finally we're going to have this fight that so many people have been waiting for. We have gone through some difficult moments, but common sense and good faith have prevailed. My career will be stronger now that Caribe and Top Rank have agreed to [work together]. Now I can look at this date of April 13th without any worries. Just tell Nonito to prepare for what's coming," Rigondeaux said.
