Yesterday BoxingScene.com ran two articles in which WBO/WBA junior featherweight champion Guillermo "El Chacal" Rigondeaux spoke about his promotional status and also the possibility of facing his mandatory challenger Chris Avalos in the fall.  Rigondeaux is currently promoted by Caribe Promotions but is looking for a co-promoter.

Shortly after our conversation with Rigondeaux, BoxingScene.com spoke to Caribe Promotions President Boris Arencibia about the company's plan for the two time Olympic gold medalist.

Arencibia said that the immediate goal is for Rigondeaux to face Avalos who is the WBO's mandatory challenger. He would like the fight to take place in Miami, Florida, which is where Rigondeaux lives and has a large Cuban population. Arencibia feels that if Rigondeaux can draw a big crowd, it will give them more bargaining power to negotiate a more favorable long term promotional deal.

"We are very interested in reaching an agreement with Top Rank to make the fight against Chris Avalos.  It will me a contract for just the one fight.  Top Rank and Avalos' team need to come to an agreement and if they come to an agreement then we will have a fight.  The fight will take place in November or December.  I prefer not to say which network it will be on but it may take place on HBO, Showtime or another big network.

"The fight will definitely take place in the United States and there is a good chance it will happen in Miami.  There is a lot of interest in having it in Miami.  We really would like it to happen here. We want to show that Rigo can sell tickets here in Miami. We want the promoters to know that the community of Miami supports Rigondeaux and that there is an audience for him.  We want to show with the Avalos fight what potential Rigondeaux has," Arencibia told BoxingScene.com.
