Ricky Burns stopped Scotty Cardle in great fashion and proved he still has plenty more in the tank. The pair clashed in a late-notice lightweight dust-up at Manchester Arena, with the Scot getting the better of his former sparring partner in a statement-maker.

Ricky Burns will be back in action next month. The 50-fight veteran has been out of the ring since June. Any hopes of an all-Scottish clash between Ricky Burns and Josh Taylor appear to have been dashed by the three-weight world champion. Burns, 35, reached a milestone on Saturday night in Newcastle by having his 50th professional fight. The victory over Ivan Njegac, who retired in round four of their six-rounder, may not be up there with Burns' magnificent achievements over the years but the fire still burns for 'Rickster', however his career will most likely continue at 135lbs than 140lbs - the weight which Taylor competes at.

Ricky Burns reached the half-century in the paid ranks with a triumph. The Coatbridge man, a former three-weight global ruler, was in action for the first time since last October’s defeat to Anthony Crolla. Burns, now 35, got the ring rust off with a win over Ivan Njegac by retirement after the Croatian was pulled out by his corner at the start of round number five at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.
