WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns says he was never ducking a mandatory fight with Adrien Broner in 2011. As the mandatory fight was ordered and negotiations were starting to play out, Burns vacated his belt and made a move to the lightweight division.
Broner has now made his own move to 135-pounds and faces WBC champion Antonio DeMarco on November 17th. Burns will return on December 15th but then he wants his promoter Frank Warren to get him the DeMarco-Broner winner.
"After the Nicky Cook fight that was the last straw for me. Everyone who knows me, they knew I was tight at the weight. Four weeks before the fight that was all that I was worried about, trying to get the weight down. Obviously I have to come through the 15th of December first, but that's a fight that I would obviously love [against Broner]. Adrien Broner has a tough fight on his hands with DeMarco as well. As long as I get through this, Frank said that we will try to get a fight with the winner," Burns said to ILondon.
