Ricky Burns To Defend in June or July, Offers Flying In

Three Scottish politicians are keen for Ricky Burns' next fight to be at an outdoor arena in Airdrie.

Burns is looking to make a third defence of his WBO super-featherweight title this summer.

And another belt could also be on the line.

Burns' first two defences have been at the Braehead Arena, Glasgow, and the venue will be a front-runner for any appearance in June or July.

But the Excelsior stadium, home of Airdrie United, could also come into contention.

The Scottish Daily Record reports that three local parliamentarians have given their backing for an al fresco event.

Airdrie MSP Karen Whitefield said: "This would be a great coup and a boost for the Excelsior Stadium and the local economy."

Airdrie and Shotts MP Pamela Nash told the paper: "Ricky's next fight being held there would give us the opportunity to showcase our best talent and our excellent venue to the world."

And Tom Curley, North Lanarkshire Council provost, added: "I would love it if we could bring a world title fight to Airdrie. It would be tremendous for the town and the wider area."

One of the weakest divisions in boxing right now. Hopefully he can find a decent fight.
