Description: 15,939 fans loaded the Staples Center to see Klitschko and Lewis battle for the heavyweight title. Lewis came in to the fight weighing 256 pounds, the highest of his career and visibly out of shape. Vitali came into the fight looking to prove a point that he was the best heavyweight in the world.

In the end, Vitali Klitschko was bloodied but still willing to fight. The bout turned into a 6 round war that was finally stopped by the ring doctor Paul Wallace and ended Vitali's chance of becoming heavyweight champion. Klitschko had several cuts that required stitches to close, the most severe was above his left eye. The cut above the left eye was caused by a Lewis right hand in the third round.

Klitschko was winning 58-56 on all three scorecards as the fight was stopped. Klitschko and Lewis exchanged huge shots throughout the fight and saw Lewis being buckled bad in the second and third rounds of the fight.

"He is a great fighter. I won this fight in points," Klitschko said. "I want a rematch. I showed everybody that I can fight Lennox Lewis. I can see very well, I don't know why the doctor stopped the fight. Right now I feel like the people's champion, I did not want them to stop the fight. My strategy was to take it into the seventh or eighth round and my strategy was working perfectly."

"If the fight went on, I would have knocked him out," Lewis said. "There is no way he could have finished the fight. He was just deteriorated anyway. We are big guys and any punch is going to hurt. I do give him credit. I gave him a chance to fight. He has an unusual European style.

"I was just getting my second wind. It was only a matter of time. He was deteriorating. The referee saved his face. I was getting to him. Just look at his face," Lewis said. "I was going to stop him."

"When he raised his head up, his upper eyelid covered his field of vision," doctor Paul Wallace said. "At that point I had no other option but to stop the fight. If he had to move his head to see me, there was no way he could defend his way against a punch."

Fight Facts

Klitschko went into the fight a 4-1 underdog.

Lewis took the bout on two weeks notice after original challenger Kirk Johnson became injured.

Lewis became only the third heavyweight champion his age or older to successfully defend the heavyweight title.

Klitschko was fighting in the United States for only the second time.

Lewis earned $10 million.

A good fight spoiled by the premature conclusion. It is a shame and a loss. If Klit was not cut what would have happend. Recent news suggest Lennox isn`t gonna give us the chance to find out but Klitscko got another shot at the title and won it so time might tell..

This was one of the best Heavyweight fights. The fans deserve to see a rematch which should of been scheduled right after this one. Someone needs to get Lewis to come out one more time.

Had the fight continued, Vitali Klitschko would've been a lot worse off because he'd have been out on his back.

Great action & drama for a heavyweight fight. Both guys landed big punches.
Lewis was training to fight fat & underachieving Kirk Johnson who I am sure he was planning on KOing within 4 rounds. I would like to have seen what the fight would have been like if Lewis was training to fight Vitali.
Brutal cut on Vitalis eye.

In my opinion Lewis was coming on when the fight was stopped. I think he was getting his second wind.
