Description: Roy Jones Jr., after defeating John Ruiz for the WBA heavyweight title, dropped two weight classes to take on light heavyewight rival Antonio Tarver and nearly paid the price for trying to settle unfinished business. The fight was billed as "Now, it's personal" and was a rematch of an amateur fight the two fought as 13-year-olds in the Sunshine State Games in Florida which Jones won by decision.

The fight was more of a chess match early but it picked up as the rounds went on, building to a frenzied finish as Jones came on strong in the final two rounds. Tarver seemed to land the bigger punches and more of them, marking the left side of Jones' face and taking the fight to him. But Jones landed well to the body and did enough to win on two of the three ringside cards.

Jones had said the fight would be his last at light heavyweight, and that he planned to end his career with a heavyweight fight against Mike Tyson sometime next year. His performance about Tarver may have said more about his age - 34 - and the fact he weighed 193 in his last fight than the state of his legendary skills.

"I beat the man tonight, that makes me the man," Tarver said. "I won the fight hands down. His face tells the story. I'm disappointed. I gave better than a great effort tonight. I am the new people's champion.

"I was very tired because of the weight," Jones said. "It was a tough fight because of the weight. I had to lose 25 pounds, and it was a tough 25 pounds to lose. I was fighting the first two minutes of every round and he was trying to win the last 30 seconds of the round. That was his strategy, but you can't win a fight winning only 30 seconds of a round."One mega-dollar heavyweight fight with Tyson and then I'm done. I take my hat off to him, he was trying to win. I got very tired because of the weight."

Fight Facts:

Jones was an 8-1 Favorite coming into the fight.

Tyson fight never came off and Jones rematched Tarver.

The action was mediocre. One guy was there for the taking and the other was too scared to see it.

I had Tarver winning...just! Jones fought very badly at times and yet still won rounds justifiably. If this fight had occured two or three years earlier i think Roy would have made Tarver his bitch. As for the quality of the fight, both seemed scared, not a pleasing fight overall!

Bet with winkyisnasty13 If Calzaghe beats lacy, he pays Kimmy 3000 pts. If Lacy beats Calzaghe, Kimmy pays winkyisnasty13 5000 pts OUTSTANDING BET with superlightweight If Calzaghe beats Lacy, he pays me 5 million, if Lacy wins i pay him 5 million. PAID

Tarver would try and steal the round with his 30 second flurries, but i had Jones winning by 2 points. He showed a lot of heart by winning the championship rounds and pulling it out, Even though Tarver beat Jones 2-1. I never thought much of Tarver in any of the fights. And he just come along at the right time when Jones was starting to fade.
