Robert Garcia is a very busy man these days as his stable of fighters seems to continue to grow more and more. His group of fighters range from world champions to up and coming prospects and he devotes a great deal of his time to all of them.
His newest champion is his little brother Mikey Garcia who is coming off a dominant victory over Orlando Salido this past January and is looking to clean out the Featherweight division. Robert also trains current WBO Super Bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire who seems unbeatable at the moment. Donaire has talked about moving up to Featherweight and an interesting and great match up would be Donaire and Mikey Garcia.
The snag is both men are under the tutelage of Robert Garcia who told BoxingScene that he doesn’t think we’ll ever see Donaire and Mikey in the ring even if he were to stop training Donaire.
“No, no I don't think so. Nonito, I've been with Nonito for many years and I love him and his family and his team. I'm still involved in his camp [and] Mikey is my little brother [so you] definitely won't see it. Even if for some reason I wasn't working with Nonito, I still wouldn't want to see that fight because I still love him. It would just be a fight that wouldn't make sense for me. I know the boxing world would love it but not me” said Garcia with a smile.
The Robert Garcia Boxing Academy gym has a great vibe as everybody treats each other as family and even new additions to the team are quickly taken in and made to feel at home. Garcia assures they are a team and they will all help each other before they ever think of fighting.
“Right now at Featherweight we have to see Cameron Dunkin has lined up for [Mikey] and if there's nothing maybe our next move is to move up to 130. But it’s all up to Cameron Dunkin. If he has a few fighters lined up that we might fight then we'll probably stay at Featherweight. If not we'll move up and maybe leave the title vacant for Nonito Donaire. You never know, we're a team [and[ we're going to work as a team and leave it all up to Cameron Dunkin” Garcia would tell BoxingScene.
Donaire vs Mikey Garcia would definitely be a great fight if it were to ever happen but it’s understandable why we will probably never get to see it.
