It was perhaps as emphatic a win as could be. Daniel Jacobs stepped in with one of the other top middleweights, Peter Quillin, hurt him early in the first round with a right hand and then finished him before the round even hit its halfway point. And with that, Jacobs feels he will finally get the respect he deserved but which some hadn’t yet given him.

Brooklyn's Jacobs (31-1, 28 KOs) won the "Battle For Brooklyn," a matchup of top middleweights facing off in the prime of their career in their hometown.
The best fighters in the world will almost never have to react to being badly hurt. Then again, the best fighters in the world can remain the best if they know how to react to being stunned. Floyd Mayweather Jr. had the presence of mind, or the instinct, to hold onto Shane Mosley for dear life when Mosley rocked him in the second round of their fight years ago. Peter Quillin didn’t do the same thing when Daniel Jacobs wobbled him in the first and only round of their bout this past Saturday. Instead, he alternated between covering up and trying to stand his ground and trade.
It can be hard enough for a fighter to lose. Peter Quillin’s first loss had to be a tough one. He didn’t even make it half a round against Daniel Jacobs and was wobbled badly enough that referee Harvey Dock halted the bout. It would be understandable, then, for a fighter to respond with disappointment, frustration and pride. Quillin, however, was at peace with what happened — and didn’t protest the stoppage.
As I predicted it was a tougher job than many expected for James DeGale against Lucian Bute. The judges in Quebec may even have been a tad generous in their markings. Sky’s Jim Watt scored it a draw and I thought it was very close – at best a round or two in it.
NEW YORK – Lou DiBella defended referee Harvey Dock for Dock’s stoppage of the Daniel Jacobs-Peter Quillin fight in the first round Saturday night. Dock halted their WBA middleweight title fight 1 minute and 25 seconds into the first round with a disoriented Quillin still on his feet. Quillin (32-1-1, 23 KOs) never went down, but Jacobs’ crushing right hand to the temple left the former WBO middleweight champion stumbling across the ring on unstable legs.
NEW YORK – Peter Quillin didn’t predict a knockout Thursday. If you read between the lines, though, that wasn’t all that necessary. When asked if he thinks his scheduled 12-round middleweight title fight against Daniel Jacobs will go the distance, the powerful Quillin implied it would be in Jacobs’ best interests to try to box Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

But when it was over, Daniel Jacobs had stopped Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin, retained his WBA middleweight title, and picked up local bragging rights. All in 85 seconds. “Speed kills,” Jacobs said. After a very brief feeling out process, a Jacobs right hand rocked Quillin in the first minute, and “The Miracle Man” emptied everything he had on his dazed opponent. Quillin tried to cover up and weather the storm, but Jacobs was relentless. Eventually, it looked like Quillin had cleared his head, but another right hand staggered him and nearly sent him down. Quillin stayed upright, but as referee Harvey Dock moved in, he looked in the former champion’s eyes and stopped the fight at the 1:25 mark. “I have the utmost respect for him, but I knew this was going to be my night,” Jacobs said. With the win, Jacobs, who was making the third defense of his title, moves to 31-1 with 27 KOs. Quillin falls to 32-1-1 with 23 KOs. Jacobs has won eleven fights in a row since suffering his first defeat, at the hands of Dmitry Pirog in 2010.
New York - The future seems bright in 2016 for the winner of Saturday’s fight between middleweights Danny Jacobs (30-1, 27 KO’s) and Peter Quillin (32-0-1, 23 KO’s), who battle for the WBA "regular" title. Showtime recently added the December 19th WBO middleweight title clash between champion Andy Lee of Ireland and champion Billy Joe Saunders from England.
