A major heavyweight fight will be announced by Team Sauerland - headed by Kalle Sauerland - on Tuesday, March 15 at Barclay Arena (formerly O2 Arena) in Hamburg, Germany.
Kubrat Pulev is already confirmed to headline the show, with his forthcoming opponent momentarily billed as ”Mr X”. However, Sauerland´s Twitter flow strongly suggests an agreement is already in place for Pulev to face off versus veteran contender Dereck Chisora (25-5) for the vacant EBU heavyweight title.
Both boxers are promoted by Sauerland Event, which makes the fight that much easier to make. Several additional sources have confirmed Chisora as the opponent, with the EBU website confirming an agreement is in place for Barclay Arena to host the event, which is expected to take place in May.
Also expected to be on the card is interim super welterweight titlist Jack Culcay.
With Pulev hailing from Bulgaria and Chisora representing England, a clash staged in Hamburg may not suggest box-office gold on the surface. However, there exists a sizable Bulgarian community in Germany, along with the career-long notoriety carried by the pair of heavyweights.
Both are best known for title fight losses to the Klitschkos, although have achieved much more in their respective careers.
Chisora (25-5, 17KOs) dropped a 12-round decision to Vitali Klitschko in their Feb. '12 clash. The event was marred both by his pre-fight antics as well as a post-fight riot caused by his infamous on-site "glassed" brawl with David Haye, prompting a head-on collision between the two just five months later in which Chisora suffered a 5th round knockout for his third straight loss.
The born-again contender has since won 10 of his past 11 starts. The lone loss came in a 10th round stoppage at the hands of Tyson Fury in their Nov. '14 rematch.
Fury went on to become World heavyweight champion, outpointing Wladimir Klitschko over 12 rounds last November.
Meanwhile, Chisora - following an eight-month break - has racked up five consecutive victories in a six month span, including a 2nd round knockout win in January.
Pulev (22-1, 12KOs) enjoyed a far more honest path to the title - and with considerably less fanfare or controversy. The now 34-year old heavyweight powered his way to contention with wins over then-unbeaten Alexander Ustinov and veteran Top 10 contender Tony Thompson.
It led to his lone career title shot - as well as his lone defeat, suffering a 5th round knockout at the hands of then-champ Wladimir Klitschko in Nov. '13. The setback came at the very same arena that will host his forthcoming showdown with Chisora.
