In his recent interview with Hamburger Abendblatt, Waldemar Kluch, the new head of Universum Box Promotion, indicated the possibility of a big heavyweight fight between reigning WBA “regular” champion Alexander Povetkin (24-0, 16 KOs) and highly regarded contender Denis Boytsov (31-0, 25 KOs), who is rated #1 by the WBO, #2 by the WBC, #4 by the WBA and #10 by the IBF. The fight between two undefeated Russian heavyweights is possible in the fall, said Kluch.
However, Povetkin’s flamboyant manager Vladimir Hryunov denied any possibility of the bout, at least in the near future.
“Our primary goal is a mandatory defense for Alexander – against Hasim Rahman”, commented Hryunov. “I don’t like the idea of Povetkin versus Boytsov. I see no sense in such a fight. I’m sure there are plenty of other much more thrilling options for both fighters. I have always supported Denis. I wished him all the best in the past and I wish him all the best now – both as a man and as a fighter”.
